La cabecera municipal, lleva el apellido de "Díaz Covarrubias", en honor de Juan Díaz Covarrubias, uno de los practicantes de medicina que fue fusilado en Tacubaya. El primer grupo en llegar a la región fueron los "acxotecas" según Chimalpahin establishedían de Tula, quienes se llamaron chalcas y fueron de los primeros gobiernos de nobles. El segundo grupo en llegar fueron los mihuaques, que carecían de mandatarios y adoptaron los de los acxotecas. Hacia 1160 a d. C llegaron los chichimecas teotenancas provenientes del Valle de Toluca y que pasaron por Tlahuac. En los alrededores del lago habitaron cuixocas, temimilolcas e huipanecas, quienes formaron una congregación de tribus bajo el apelativo de chalcas. Según otra fuente en el año ce ácatl, 999, los trogloditas de Xicco bajaron a fundar la ciudad de Chalco a la orilla oriental del lago dulce, siendo los jefes del pueblo naciente Acapol y su marido Texcótzin, hijo de Chalcátzin.
